Flumserberg is a town in the Switzerland eastern, located in Canton of St. Gallen and not far from the border with the Canton of Grisons. It is located right next to the Lake Walen and overlooks the mountains of the Churfirsten range, whose sharp peaks are of particular geological interest.

Overall, the area represents the main ski destination in eastern Switzerland, thanks to the presence of 65 kilometers of slopes, 6 kilometers of ski routes and 18 ultra-modern facilities serving skiers, ranging from a height of 660 meters to over 2.220 metres.

In particular, the Flumserberg station is located on a plateau that oscillates between 1.000 and 1.400 meters above sea level, directly overlooking Lake Walen, while downstream is the town of Flums. A region known for centuries for the presence of whey-based baths, the location has always fascinated many thanks to its uncontaminated nature and fascinating landscapes, which were the inspiration for Johanna Spyri, author of the stories about Heidi (not surprisingly, the area is ideally part of the tourist region known as Heidiland).

As far as skiing activities are concerned, the area is among the most cutting-edge in the Alps: not only does it boast some of the most modern ski lifts, but there are also artificial snow structures that act as a model for the rest of the country .

Furthermore, it is the largest station between Zurich (from which it is particularly easy to reach Flumserberg) and Chur. The season opens regularly at the end of November and is guaranteed at least until the beginning of April.

The descents, overall, present different degrees of difficulty, even if the vast majority are at a medium/easy level (we are talking about around 55 km out of the 65 available for skiing activities).
However, there are black slopes, among which the most challenging are those that start from the top of Mount Leist, at over 2.200 meters above sea level, reachable thanks to the chairlift of the same name. On the opposite side there are also the Grueb and Seeben slopes (at 1.845 and 1.622 meters high respectively).
Not far away are also the red slopes of Plattis (at around 1.800 metres) and Mschegenkamm (at over 2.000 meters above sea level), reachable via a six-seater chairlift.

In addition to the difficult and intermediate slopes, it is also possible to take advantage of simpler ski routes, taking advantage of the special ski slopes set up right above Flumserberg, or of the wide blue slopes found near Chruz (at around 1.600 meters above sea level).

Flumserberg offers excellent fun opportunities for snowboarders, thanks to the presence of fun parks, jumps and a halpipe, which also allow freeride diversions. In addition to this, the Prodalp resort offers a complex of 18 km of slopes for Nordic skiing enthusiasts.

As for the little ones, it can be said that Flumserberg is one of the most popular ski resorts for family fun. In fact, children have the opportunity to learn the basics of skiing with dedicated lessons at special kids parks, equipped with special slopes that allow them to train in a perfectly safe context. Furthermore, children can entertain themselves in the most varied ways thanks to the presence of numerous centers for the most diverse sporting activities, which have earned the locality the title of "Families Welcome": near the stations, in fact, it is possible to find special ski slopes humps and sledding.

What to do in Flumserberg if you don't ski?

Given its location close to Zurich, Flumserberg can be considered a gigantic amusement park, loved by the Swiss for the most diverse activities and winter sports. However, near the ski area there are also some locations that can offer various services, such as hotels, restaurants, shops and so on. Among these are Tannenboden and Tannenheim (the closest to the lifts) and the village at the bottom of the valley, Flums.

There are many activities and sports that can be practiced even by those who do not want to spend their time on the ski slopes. Among the many, in fact, it is possible to take advantage of specialized guides to try the experience of a walk with sled dogs, complete with shooting equipment, sledding in the snowy landscape and ending with a tasting of mulled wine.

Furthermore, the Churfirsten chain is a favorite destination for geological and paleontological themed excursions. Here enthusiasts will be able to live the exciting experience of the Flumserberg geo-galleries, through a 4 kilometer long path at high altitude aimed at highlighting the effects of the geological phenomena that have made the stratification of rocks and fossils possible as if it were a real art Gallery. The route begins around Mount Zigen, starting from the Maschgenkamm station (which is also accessible for disabled people and small children): from here we proceed for another 15 stations until reaching Mount Prodkamm, through illustrations of the tectonic phenomena that have affected this part of the Alps and other information for the more curious.

Another activity aimed at fun and recreation is the special climbing tower on the Prodalp which, thanks to the 3 floors each of which has 30 different stations, a 15 meter "freefall" and obstacles of different difficulties, allows experts, but also for children over the age of 4, to be able to experience the thrill of climbing.

Of course, there is also room for relaxation. In addition to the classic centers that can be found nearby, some hotels in the Flumserberg offer a unique experience for the well-being of your body: a hydromassage bath in ancient wooden tubs heated on a wood fire, which can accommodate up to six people and, possibly also be held in the evening with appropriate and suggestive lighting. Furthermore, in Bad Ragaz there are spa stations included within an ultra-modern structure equipped with hot pools, sauna, solarium and numerous wellness programs for adults and children.

Overall, Flumserberg is the perfect destination for sports enthusiasts and those looking for fun and relaxation: ideal for families, children and young people, this destination offers many alternatives, starting from the ski slopes and ending with the most diverse winter activities such as excursions, cultural walks and body care.

This location is therefore particularly suitable for those traveling with children and for ski enthusiasts who are not looking for too demanding challenges: the majority of the slopes, in fact, are at an intermediate level and off-piste possibilities are rarer. than in other destinations.

The proximity to Zurich makes it very easy to reach and move from Flumserberg, although, despite other destinations in the area, the size of the area and the ease of reaching it also make this location particularly crowded in the high winter season or on weekends. In fact, it is very common for Swiss people to travel during the weekend to easily reach one of the many ski resorts in the area.

Another advantage, which could indicate Flumserberg as an ideal destination for a White week, is the fact that most of the apartments and hotels (a good part of which are equipped with entertainment services for the little ones) are located a very short distance from the slopes, with the possibility of free transport to the stations.
