In the province of Sondrio, in the middle of Stelvio National Park, is the Ski Area of Santa Caterina Valfurva. At 1738 meters above sea level, it is one of the most sought-after destinations for snow lovers, with its 35 km of slopes, which can also reach altitude 2700 meters. Here it is always possible to have optimal conditions for practicing not only skiing, but also many other winter sports. Thanks to the presence of an artificial snow system, several important competitions have taken place on these slopes, such as the 2000 FIS World Cup Finals and the 2005 Alpine Ski World Championships; many champions can say that they have carried out their training right here (we are talking about Deborah Compagnoni, Fabrizio Pedranzini, Bruno Bonetta, Silvio Confortola and molti altri).

The real spearhead of this place remains the Santa Caterina Valfurva National Ski & Snowboard School with many courses and eighty-five professional teachers (there are also two specialized in teaching the blind) who are ready to open the doors to winter sports even to the less experienced, from the traditional alpine skiing, cross-country skiing to ski mountaineering, freeriding in fresh snow, carving, telemark, snowboardingas well as courses for children, competitive courses, individual lessons and even courses for those who want to become a ski instructor.
Thanks to the variety of disciplines covered and the preparation of the teachers, this school has always been a point of reference not only for the inexperienced, but also for enthusiasts who have been practicing the mountain for a long time, who can develop their techniques and learn new movements , perfecting himself in various styles. Even in the summer, the activity of these teachers is not interrupted: in fact, in the summer months some of them are employed at the "University of Ski", ie the Pirovano Ski School which is located on the Stelvio glacier.

Every single tourist is always well received and looked after, thanks to the large number of specialized and well-equipped structures for any need: for example, we remind you that the Sky Stadium also includes a fenced and secured space, dedicated to children or in any case to those who are first weapons; or, for enthusiasts, there is a large ice skating rink, while those who love climbing can find an artificial wall in the gym for training. Also for children there is also a Kindergarten, where entertainment and ski instruction are combined, all in the complete tranquility of the parents.

Those who do not like skiing, snowboarding or other typical mountain sports can always dedicate themselves to walks in the snow following the mapped and signposted routes that start from different points of the town and reach high-altitude destinations or walk through the center perhaps with their own family, and explore the local culture, especially the gastronomic one, kept intact in the methods and ingredients from generation to generation.

  • I have been several times and have always found uncrowded slopes, powdery or compact snow and very fast lifts. It's a shame that the much hoped-for connection with Bormio hasn't happened yet! It would have enormous potential but they don't do anything....
