Like all nature centres, the center of Sappada is also characterized mainly by small wooden houses created with the architectural technique of interlocking beams at the corners, the so-called "blockbau".
With this method each part of the building is built with a part of tree and without the use of concrete. In fact, every year many events are organized where it is possible to watch the works created by the carvers.
Inside the center there are several villages that make Sappada a universe to be explored. Among the churches built in Baroque style you will find the parish church of S.Margherita, the occasional Regina Pacis located in the Soravia village, the church of Sant'Osvaldo and the beautiful chapel of Sant'Antonio; while for those who want to know the origins of the history of Sappada, the town offers you a multitude of museums.
The best known is the "Giuseppe Fontana" Ethnographic Museum, which will lead you to discover the origins of Sappada through flora and fauna. Another museum is the Little Museum of the Great War, where there are precious relics of the First World War.
Why spend your holidays in Sappada?
The main fundamental points that explain the reason for spending holidays in Sappada, in addition to naturalistic excursions, churches and museums, are the folklore events. The events are numerous: the best known is the Sappadino Carnival, which is celebrated every Sunday and each time depicts a different social class represented precisely by masked citizens.
The Carnival of Sappada is very old and is characterized by small theatrical representations in which the characters depict scenes relating to rural life. The most famous character of this carnival is the so-called Mask of Rollate, the most important symbol of the city and of Shrove Monday.
The Rollate is a characteristic character who wears a fur coat with cowbells and who plays while walking to make his passage understood; while during Shrove Tuesday ski races are organized for adults and children.
In addition to the Sappadino Carnival, you will find the Folklore festival, a festival organized by the group of woodcutters, characterized by parades of people from all over the world, the Plodar Fest, this is also a folk festival with traditional music and local food and the Sappamukki festival which recalls the period of migration of the flocks, a period in which the cows return to the country where they have spent the period in the mountains.
As you can see, the naturalistic territory of Sappada is a very rich territory in certain characteristics, where there are many attractions for adults and children with a wonderful view of the snow-capped mountains.
