La Schilpario ski resort was founded in 1959 by a group of Lombard engineers. It was one of the first ski resorts to be equipped with a cable car and soon became a popular destination for skiers from Lombardy, especially from Milan, Bergamo and Brescia. Over the years the ski route was improved and the accommodation service improved, still within the possibilities of those times.
Today the cable car has been abandoned to make way for a modern four-seater chairlift with automatic coupling. Schilpario is located at an altitude of 1135 meters, east of the Val di Scalve surrounded to the south-east by mountains with Dolomite characteristics including Pizzo Camino (2492 m) and Cimon della Bagozza (2407 m); to the northeast the mountains have the characteristics of the Alps and are the ridge that divides the province of Sondrio from the province of Bergamo.
The district has a 3000m long runway which descends from an altitude of 1580m to an altitude of 1154m called Aigue Fréde which has been widened and completely grassed over in recent years. In addition to the main slope, there is also a large ski school area between 1140m and 1260m, served by a modern ski lift with an hourly capacity of 900 people. The school camp is located in the village on the edge of the access road to the lifts and the large car park serving the station.
Schilpario also knows how to offer a lot to cross-country skiing enthusiasts thanks to the Pista degli Abeti complex, a series of tracks in the heart of the pine forest that extends parallel to the Dezzo river. The track, surrounded by nature, offers loops of three, five, eight and ten kilometres, for classic technique and skating that are always perfect thanks to daily maintenance and precise signage.
All the slopes are exposed to the north at the foot of Pizzo Camino guaranteeing, together with the artificial snow system, a satisfactory snow cover until late in the season.

If, on the other hand, you want a slightly less technical but equally fun activity, then you can organize a snowshoe hike in the Conca di Epolo (1500m) where various paths wind their way set between the slopes of Monte Pizzo Camino and the fir forest overlooking Schilpario.
