The Maxiavalanche of Breuil Cervinia she is used to snow, if only for her departure from the 3500 meters of the Plateau Rosa Glacier. The more than 300 bikers who sign up for this spectacular competition every year therefore know that they will have to deal with an all-white terrain in the first part of the route.
What is different, however, is waiting for the start and making the first rides not only with snow on the track but also with that falling from the sky.
This is what happened in the 2009 edition of the Maxiavalanche, which took place on the 2900st and XNUMXnd of August. Bad weather on Sunday, cold and snow above XNUMX meters and heavy rain all the way to the town meant the race was therefore concentrated on just one heat instead of the two foreseen.
But now let's take a step back in time, to Saturday, dedicated to free practice, with blue skies and pleasant temperatures, certainly everything changes.
As always, many have responded to the charm of the Maxiavalanche. Bikers from all over Italy and also from numerous European countries, 90% amateurs and 10% professionals, including the very strong French athletes.
For the organizing committee, made up of the Associazione Mountain Bike Aventure Vallée d'Aoste and the Sci Club Cervino Valtournenche, every year a challenge that is renewed, on a route that winds through glaciers, moraines and high-altitude paths. This year, following a record winter in terms of snowfall, snow even covered the first 4 kilometers of the route and a long section had been cleared as it was deemed too dangerous to tackle in the saddle.
